What is Cartilage Preservation?

Cartilage preservation refers to a specialized suite of medical and regenerative procedures aimed at protecting, repairing, or regrowing the hyaline cartilage that lines your joints. Whether caused by sports injuries, repetitive wear, or the early stages of osteoarthritis, damaged cartilage can lead to pain, swelling, and reduced function.

Our goal is to intervene early using advanced Ortho biologics and surgical techniques to “save the joint” and delay or prevent the need for artificial joint replacements.

Benefits of Cartilage Preservation

  • Maintains Natural Anatomy: Unlike joint replacement, preservation keeps your original bone and tissue intact.
  • Minimally Invasive: Most procedures are performed arthroscopically, resulting in smaller incisions and faster recovery.
  • Pain Reduction: By restoring a smooth gliding surface in the joint, we significantly reduce friction and inflammation.
  • Long-Term Mobility: These treatments are designed to keep you active and extend the lifespan of your natural joints.

Our Treatment Options

We offer a range of cutting-edge solutions tailored to the severity of the cartilage damage:

  • Ortho biologic Injections: Using Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) or regenerative cell therapies to stimulate the body’s natural healing environment.
  • Marrow Stimulation (Microfracture): A technique that creates tiny pathways in the bone to allow healing cells to reach the damaged area and form new protective tissue.
  • Cartilage Restoration: Advanced procedures like Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI), where your own cells are harvested, cultured, and reintroduced to repair larger defects.
  • Osteochondral Grafts: Using healthy cartilage “plugs” to resurface a damaged area, restoring a smooth, functional joint.

FAQ’s

The best candidates are typically younger, active individuals or those in the early to middle stages of cartilage wear. If you have localized joint pain but have not yet developed bone-on-bone arthritis, cartilage preservation may be the ideal solution to prevent further degeneration.

Recovery varies depending on the specific technique used. Minimally invasive injections may require only a few days of rest, while surgical restoration can involve a structured rehabilitation program of 4 to 6 weeks to ensure the new cartilage matures correctly.

Naturally, cartilage has very little regenerative capacity because it lacks a blood supply. This is why medical intervention is necessary. Our treatments use “marrow stimulation” or cell-based therapies to trigger a healing response that the body cannot achieve on its own.

Whenever possible, preserving your natural joint is preferred. Joint replacements are mechanical and can wear out over time, especially in younger patients. Cartilage preservation allows you to maintain your natural range of motion and biological tissue for as long as possible.

Common signs include a “catching” or “locking” sensation in the joint, swelling after activity, and a dull ache that worsens with movement. We use advanced diagnostic imaging, such as high-resolution MRI, to map the cartilage and determine the extent of the damage.
